First Impressions:
2/14/04
When I walked through the door, I was drawn to the huge display of striper flies. Next I was greeted by the friendly face of Tom Cormier. Shortly thereafter I met Jeff and Jim. Every person that came in after me was instantly greeted and offered help.
It was a very busy place. In the back room there were ten people in their third week of fly tying lessons taught by Mark Drummond. The class consisted of people from Portland to Portsmouth.
When you talk to them you can tell they really like what they are doing and are very knowledgeable. They are located in an excellent spot, only minutes from York Beach. They said from the mouth of the Piscatqua River to Mousam River is probably the best striper fishing in the state. The striper season runs from May to October. If stripers aren't your thing, they can point you in the direction of bass, pike or trout in the area.
They also have experience fishing for steelhead in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. They are a good group of guys with a lot of knowledge. Whether you are an expert or a beginner to fly fishing, they will take their time and help you get exactly what you are looking for and answer any of your questions.
This is a well stocked fly shop, so if you like to tie and are in southern Maine, stop in, they have everything.
Who They Are:
Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop started in the late 1980's with Scott Eldredge's love of fly fishing and an idea that he had for a fly shop that offered excellent customer service where any fly fisherman, no matter what their skill level, would feel comfortable. Scott had an empty room that was originally used to store molding on the second floor of his 3rd generation hardware and lumber business that he thought would be a good place start.
This idea became a reality in the fall of 1992 when Scott asked Jim Bernstein to help and manage the shop. They worked together through the winter and opened the doors in April of 1993. In 2000 the lumber and hardware business moved to a new location and the fly shop moved downstairs to set up shop in a portion of the old hardware store.
The people who comprise the Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop team are Scott, Jim, Mark Drummond, Jeff Faulkner, Wayne Bickford, and Tom Cormier. Combined they offer over 150 years of fly fishing and fly tying experience.
Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop has a vast selection of products with brand names such as Winston, Sage, Thomas & Thomas, Albright, Islander, Abel, Tibor, Pate, Teton, Waterworks Lamson, Redington, Pflueger, Dyna King, Regal, Renzetti, D.
