Eldredge Bros. Fishing Report - Stripers are here!

Posted by Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop, 09 May 2011 · 228 views

Well, it’s the second week in May and I’m finally getting around to my first spring fishing report of the year and that’s pitiful, I know.

Up until last week most of the freshwater reports from anglers were about slow fishing. Well, that is definitely starting to change. I’ve had many reports this past week from anglers fishing ponds and streams with much success. Fly patterns that have been working are all over the board which I attribute to the recent stockings of hatchery fish that are still trying to learn the difference between a pellet and natural food and are tasting everything in between. I did talk to an angler who said he witnessed a good hatch of stoneflies yesterday that the trout were feeding heavily on and they wouldn’t take anything that didn’t match the naturals. We have a very small stream next to the shop that helps to keep us apprised of what is hatching locally. So far we’ve had blue duns and red quill spinners on the outside walls of the shop. Before you Google Earth the shop to find the stream I’ll tell you that there are no trout in it. It’s so small and shallow that you could dam it with a well placed size twelve wading boot.

For more than a week now the alewife runs have been well underway in most of the local streams that they spawn in. I had a report six days ago that shad are starting to move their way up the coast. Last Thursday I decided to try for shad on a local river and successfully logged my first skunk of the year. It should only get better for the next few weeks.

Stripers are here!! Today I had two reliable reports that migrating stripers are starting to arrive in small numbers and are being caught. These are not holdovers. The reports came from two different rivers and both said that the bass were feeding on alewife’s. I suggest trying a white 4/0 grocery fly to fool these bass. It’s time to neglect your responsibilities and go fishing. Good luck.
