And we fly fishermen wonder why stripers have become so finicky lately...got a chance to get out in a boat for a change with a friend of mine from work so of course that was a no brainer, so we met up at 400pm and off we went, right off the dock we started seeing juvinile herring,...as we got around the corner we saw birds working and clouds I MEAN CLOUDS of little herring everywhere, they were feeding on a plankton bloom, we started fishing and wondered where the bass were no signs of them anywherebait were just relaxing feeding at leisure no nervous signs whatsoever, then out of the corner of my eye I heard/saw the splashing of big stripers, lots of them,...so I tossed my deceiver right into the fray and NOTHING DOING,...they passed right by the fly,...the rest of the afternoon was the same for both of us, chasing birds andbass splashing only to come up empty handed, got a chase or 2 from some smaller fish but no serious customers. I was fishing over fish and that's all that really matters, I just could not fool them into a take.

A video I took with my Pentax of the herring school, these were around 4 inches long, just millions of them.

I've been in that same scenario three times in the last week. Last week from the kayak and this week in a small boat. Birds diving and fish breaking the surface all around me, but nothing doing as far as catching. Makes me wonder if I'm better off going where I don't see any activity and casting around trying to get lucky.

With thick foodstuff, as in heavy flyhatches....often something completely different will stand out a bit more....maybe something like sand eel or crab imitations.....y/n? Then again I've never even owned a boat & motor...lol.
