The folks from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute said that this photo was most likely of a basking shark, a harmless plankton feeder. Still, if I had been in that kayak, I probably could have set a new Olympic record or some kind...

Why would a plankton feeding basking shark stalk a kayak? That guy was being followed for quite a ways according to the story, wood's hole is wrong again I would say.

Basking sharks are medium brown on the back and fins, white sharks are typically gray or black.

There are quite a few skeptics about the "basking shark". The last thing this community wanted was to have a documented case of a great white (or any other big "nasty") shark stalking tourists the 1st week of July. The folks at Wood's Hole should have just said that they did not have enough facts to state what exactly that shark was.

I don't discriminate. I see a shark of any kind and I'm out of the water.

Basking sharks can absolutely have the same coloring as a white and are "very" curious. We had a 25 footer come up to our boat last year and just swim around hecking us out. if you didn't know your shark...you would have said it was a white.

we had the same thing happen to us last october in the cape cod bay. it was giant.

also, around chatham and nauset, there were multiple confirmed great white sightings from around that time of year (even from an areal view) so they saw them very clearly.
I swear the fish was THIS BIG!

I have reached an agreement with the sharks of the world. They agreed not to follow me into any bars I might visit, and I agreed not to swim in their ocean. So far, 100% compliance on both sides - I expect the truce to hold.
