Topics I've Started

Go Pro owners

30 April 2013 - 09:27 AM

Kevin is selling his model of GoPro and someone else in the same thread said they have one but don't use it.  So that raises some questions:

If you have one, do you use it?  If not, why not? Would you recommend one to someone else based on your experience?  Are there limitations to its use that we should know about before buying one?

I was thinking about getting one to mount on my kayak and letting it run and edit the film later. But don't know how many minutes of storage is in it.  Would you run it only after you hookup with a fish?  And if I mount it, it is then in a fixed position -- if you catch a fish that is not in the viewfinder, then you won't get the battle, so how often would you actually get use out of it?

Any comments are appreciated.

2013 international didymo conference

30 March 2013 - 11:35 AM

This would normally go in the conservation but the topic is, IMHO, very important and I have the feeling that more than half of you never visit the conservation forum for various reasons -- so bear with me.

Since I haven't seen anyone from Maine that went to the didymo conference, I am supplying a link to a summary of the conference as it relates to fishermen, and please note that the same summary contains a link so you can download the conference material if you want to read it all.

I personally found it interesting that some of the growth of didymo is affected by dissolved phosphorous. Since I work with the Cobbossee Watershed District as a volunteer lake monitor, I know that a lot of Maine's lakes have an abundance of phosphorous -- this is one of the reasons we have such severe late summer algae blooms. Since water from the lakes runs into the streams and ultimately the rivers of Maine, I assume the phosphorous levels in our rivers is fairly high also -- this may factor in to why we haven't seen didymo here yet. This will be something for us to study and discuss.

And to again give you a link to the home site of the "invasive Species Action Network" --

Their site contains the latest list of state by state felt boot regulations, so if you travel and fish, check it out.

Kevin, if you want this in conservation, feel free to move it.

Proposed changes to hooks for stripers

07 March 2013 - 11:40 AM

I know most of us just fly fish for stripers on this forum, but some may also use spinning gear. There is a proposed change in the striper rules with the comment period closing March 15th. (The current harvesting rules are in the same pdf for those who have never read them.)

Possible world record striper

07 March 2013 - 11:17 AM

Sorry for the double post --  it took forever to load so I hit enter twice.  Admin -- please the double.

I don't know how this could be classed as a "landlocked" striper since it was caught in a river, but nonetheless, it is a beauty!
