Maine Fly Fish

Recommended Posts

I am heading to cape to fish some popular kettle ponds down there this weekend.

i know they haven't frozen over with the exception of a few crusted layers of ice overnight at times.

That being said the water will be cold!

curious on anyone's tips as far as location of fish and depth.

my thoughts:

buggers fished low and slow. (Green black white)

midges/blood worms hung under indicators 1-10ft down.

coves and shoals near deep drop offs.

any thoughts feel free to share! I'm dying to get into some stillwater trout and my buddy down there has been so I feel pretty confident but of course I'd prefer a 15 fish day over a 1 fish day if I can use tactics to change that!

Let us know how you do, i thought about taking a ride down there one of these weekends. I'd think small streamers/ baitfish patterns would work as well.

Sure did! Only fished Saturday and quite honestly it  was brutally slow. Each caught one fish.

We saw fish all day crushing the shore but basically the entire day consisted of casting to cruisers and watching them either look at it for a split second and turn away or not even acknowledge the fly.

After trying nearly every colored wooly bugger, streamer and midge larvae I could find in my box, I determined that they just weren't in the spiciest of moods.

The fish were there though. Everywhere.

Edit: when I arrived on Friday I had about 30-45 minutes of daylight left and headed to the pond to shore fish. In that time I saw 10+ rises, hooked 3 landed one.

Needless to say I thought Saturday would have been epic...

Interesting! This makes me want to take a ride down to the cape this weekend even for the chance at sighting/catching some fish. Were they mostly rainbows?
