Good season so far

Recommended Posts

Later start than the past few years, but nothing crazy, been plenty of years where it didn't get good till end of May or June!  Fish showed in serious numbers on May 20th for me, and haven't had a bad day since.  In fact today was the first day of the season I didn't get a 30" fish, but I did get looks from two big mid 40's. Already hooked and lost two forties sight fishing, oh well! Tons of bait around, Brit herring, river herring, alewives, sand eels and there were a bunch of macks for a few days, oh and of course crabs.  Guiding has been great with a bunch of my sports catching 30 inchers and keepahs and getting shots at 40 inchers. I've had a bunch of anglers targeting their first stripers on the fly which is one thing I really enjoy doing, and they all caught plenty of fish! Had a couple awesome days of sightfishing in sun too, one of my guys got one shot after another at fish from 25-45ish inches.  15-25" schoolies everywhere this year, been fishing a 7-10" fly with 7/0 hook a lot to keep em off.  Today I went offshore with a friend to look for early bluefin tuna, saw some whales and bait but no tunas.  I've also been able to take Liz out a few times, and with the help of my Mom got to bring our daughter Eleanor along too, that was really nice.  Have run into a few forum members so far, good to see you guys, hope everyone is enjoying the season!

I was just thinking today when is James gonna do a report. I always enjoy reading them. I have been seeing a lot of 30 ish range giver or take this season compared to last. Has been a good season so far for it being late. Nice pics as always sounds like your guiding business is going well.

Solid post and pics....probably a dumb question too, but does anyone happen to have any Intel on what type of jellyfish that is? I've been seeing a few of them around and I always like to learn as much about everything else in the ecosystem as I do the fish.

Thanks!  I am no expert on jellies but pretty sure that's a Lions Mane,  been a lot of them around past 2-3 years.

Thanks Adam, glad to hear it's going good out there for you!  Shaping up to be a nice year.  My two season goals are to help a client land a 40 and hook another tuna on the fly, and it's feeling good so far!

Tuna on the fly would be so much fun.. curious on what crab pot you are using most. I have gotten some decent ones on the original this season. I have been trying some chinelle again for claws seems like the ultra holds up decent.

Hey James

I’d be happy to volunteer to be the guy to land the 40 incher!:)

Great pictures of some great fish.

Love the last photo!

Tuna on fly is wicked fun, but it's also a bit terrifying and involves lots of driving around in shotty conditions in dead water.  Mostly clearing the line off the deck is scary, 100#+ fish going 40+mph, if that line comes up with a tangle or grabs your foot you're in some trouble.  Been on plenty of Tuna trips where we didn't even throw a cast, I'd say it's a hardcore exercise in patience!

I will probably stick with the original crab pot as my primary forever, I've landed 5 forties on it so far and many upper thirties. Several of my friends have also landed a bunch of big fish on it including a 43" 45" and beastly 46" fish!  I have a lot of confidence in that one.  3.0 has been fished a decent amount this year to good effect and it's been durable.  It's fast to "tie" too.  I did have a few that wanted to tip over, but pretty sure it was just too much of the coating that did it.

Dave I would be thrilled if you landed the first 40!!  One of my guys hooked a solid cow 2 years ago in skinny skinny water, but it smoked him and broke off.  It's been haunting me ever since!!

Good to see you and Nympho!  That was definitely an off day at that spot, great at a couple other spots, but that's fishing!

Yeah tuna sounds fun. Fish like that are worth the wait I am sure. Lines speeds from my two hander are scary enough couldn’t imagine it being ripped off the deck by a 100# + fish. Could get harry at times I imagine for sure but omg it would be a thrill. I also fish your original crab pot the most it is a amazing fly. Got a 35 and a 30 today in super sunny clear water both probably in 3 ft of water. Love it when that happens.
