Homemade poppers

Recommended Posts

After watching a YouTube video showing this technique, I decided to give it a try. Don’t know how durable this will be but I had the materials kicking around. Basically I made my own popper bodies by rolling up some craft foam and stuffing it into a straw. Then Cut the straw into sections for the size I want. Base wrap on a hook, then slide the hook eye between the foam and straw, place a drop of super glue on the shank and slide it on. I also applied some superglue on the face of the foam and got some to seep down the inside walls of the straw to glue the foam to the straw too.

Creative for sure... but they sell on eBay, for almost less than the cost of a box of straws.... aside from the fun of spinning deerhair in winter, I have resolved to just buying them.

I’ll have to check into eBay or amazon for flies. The straws I’ve used are ones that came with my drinks from various places, and I already have several sheets of craft foam. I tried painting some with nail polish, but I think I’m going to continue collecting various colored straws instead. I’m mostly looking to tie panfish sized ones anyway.
