Stimulators

Recommended Posts

Do you guys like using stimulators? I use them when the stonefly hatch is in full swing, but I often find that they cause my tippet or leader to twist (probably because of the hackle). I imagine the hackle causes a sort of vortexing that causes the fly to twist as it is flying through the air. This is purely hypothetical. Not sure how to fix it, maybe hackleless stimulator? I've never fished a stimulator without hackle (or so I think), does anyone else have this problem? Here is my typical stimulator: Stimulator.thumb.jpg.128a15d8a5c06cb099fa816b91a00eb1.jpg

Here's two things I've done to stop the twisting. Depending on the water I"m fishing

Go to a heavier leader

Use a micro swivel to attach your tippet. The swivel is small enough that it doesn't sink the fly usually. But this would be when using larger Stimies.

Nice fly by the way

Use heavier tippet... divide the hook size by 3 and that is the tippet size you should use. Maybe there is a vortex, but I just think it comes down to aerodynamics. Or lack there of b
